Welcome

Hi. Welcome to "artist-as-entrepreneur" wiki. This wiki is designed for Indigenous Australian students enrolled in the course 3901QCA Commercial Processes as part of the Bachelor of Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art (CAIA) at Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.

Unfortunately, "commercial process" has to be one of the most boring, and dryest old names for a course (unit/subject) that should be engaging, exciting, dynamic and energic. As a result I've entitled the wiki - artist-as-entrepreneur.

I look forward to an exciting 13 weeks as we look at some old (some accounting stuff & look at business models) and some very new (social media, digital identity) concepts. You need to keep in mind (as I will be reminded myself as well), that this course will not provide a thorough and detailed knowledge of accounting, business law and business principles. In the 13 weeks that we are together, it should provide however a foundation for your life after university - as you create opportunities for yourselves and others in the arts industry.

We're focusing on using a range of communication & learning tools widely available (including Google Tools, wiki etc). If you've never used these tools, this may seem a little daunting, however given that you'll be graduating very soon - I believe its important to get out there and try some of the amazing (& free) tools available post-graduation.

I have set the book How to Start A Successful Aboriginal Business in Australia by Neil Willmett as the required text book for this course. Neil's book is the first "business book" written by an Aboriginal person, and he directly speaks to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in their quest to start their own businesses. The book should be available from the campus shop in week one and will be a valuable resource for many years to come! I encourage you to purchase a copy.

I look forward to your feedback and engagement.

Cheers, Leesa
